You can download it here from the app store.

The initial release is packed full of features already. The available surfcams stream live to your iPhone - either over Wifi or 3G - and can all be remote controlled. Following an overview of the apps features in detail.

With the initial purchase of the app, users get a monthly subscription and 40 credits to control the cameras. Each time a camera is controlled, one credit is used up. The subscription is renewed every month. Both come at $2.99 or at least that's the current pricing.

For the surfcam controlling you use the iPhone swipe gestures. You can also zoom in-out by pinching.

When in control, users can also jump to pre-defined breaks on the beach which can be very helpful when you need to move the camera to the opposite end of a beach or if you want to simply explore the local surfspots!

The image quality can be very good, the speed of the stream depends on your reception.

The 8D4Cast conditions report provides current data on tide times, wind (and its effect on the waves), weather, water temperature and a graph indicating swell size & conditions for the coming eight days.

What is particularly informing to read every day besides viewing the graph is the editorial 8D outlook. SURFit will soon have custom forecasts for each beach that is available as well.

Somewhat hidden within the conditions/ forecast section of the app is the 6am report which is what i would personally call a hidden gem in terms of its usefulness to local surfers. I use it myself every morning to check on what the conditions were an hour before my clock woke me up.! You have to scroll all the way down to find the 6am report within the 8D4C, maybe in a future release we will find a neat way of making it easier to get to.

We really think that we have created something quite unique here. SURFit iPhone is an app that focuses 100% on the needs of surfers, kiters, swimmers, beachgoers in general. And with an expanding list of cameras it only gets better!

We used a mix of on- and offshore resources for the development and graphical design portions of the app. It all linked together at the Australian Pantha Corp office in Narrabeen from which the resources were co-ordinated, user-stories written and wireframes mocked up for the interaction design. As on other projects it's quite fascinating to see how much can get done by a small team focused on the best outcomes.

I can only say: enjoy SURFit iPhone and let us have your comments & wishes via the SURFit Facebook group! The future should bring more beaches, more beaches and H264 encoding at least for the live streaming part which should reduce the download demands of the app considerably.

Good teamwork with our partner IDEAS Systems who launched surfit.com as a service quite a while back and are providing all the infrastructure & content for the app, we are looking forward to creating the coming app releases for them!

Show the Loo was rebuilt from the ground up, offering an overall improved user experience and first and foremost drastically increased speed.!

View screenshots and download the new version here.

The initial version was really a proof of concept for us here at Pantha Corp to see what you could do with the early iPhone SDK. Of course, we would still love to incorporate the excellent data of toiletmap.gov.au (see also other entry here) into the Australian version although it does not seem very likely after our initial request for a license was rejected. We are not giving up hoping that this might change in the future.

The new features in comparison to the previous one are:
* All close-by loo's in a radius of 10km are displayed rather than only a small subset of the available ones
* The GPS accuracy is displayed and updated as the iPhone receives an updated co-ordinate
* The distance to the selected loo is shown and updated 'live'
* A random loo within Australia is displayed when shaking the iPhone

About 1/5th of all users have downloaded the new version in the first few days since the release. We are looking forward to everyone's feedback and indeed hope that we will fare better this time around given all improvements made.

Before commencing development of version 2 we still want to improve the initial loading of directions which - depending on the users connection - can still take longer than we would like it to.

Last month we launched the 1001artists.com website. A little less than 4 months were required to give birth to this ambitious web-based art marketplace, conceived by an artist herself, Caroline Perletti, for the artists and their fans, and just about all the lovers of all things art.

The site is in French but the intent is global, and an English version is on the road map.

4 months-long...a global team to deliver from idea to market ... Quite a challenge !

Here is the "making of" story in short words, leaving some of the pain aside and focusing on the constructive aspects of the endeavor.

So what exactly is this 1001artists project about?

It's an online art marketplace, where artists get to show and sell their art directly to customers without intermediaries, no commissions added on top of the genuine price they set themselves for their creations. Ultimately they'll be able to create their own personal gallery on the site.

The site caters for a wide range of categories: from visual art to sculpture, kitchen ware, clothing, jewelry and even leather saddles (les fameuses selles camarguaises!).

When an artist registers on the site, he/she is guided step by step through a simple process where he/she gets to choose a "pack" that best suit his/her need and ambition, and start selling after just a few clicks.

The artists packs are designed to provide a range of services at a fair-price.
One can choose from a free pack, enabling the exhibition of 1 art-piece for a month for free, to a pack "Gogo" offering unlimited artwork exhibition for up to 12 months, for about 250 Euros.

The buyers get to browse a large selection of original art pieces, buy online securely or contact and pay the artist directly.

Caroline Perletti together with Luc Bonnin from Revelis, both located in France, engaged Pantha Corporation to architect, build and launch the 1001artists e-commerce platform.

We setup the operation in a very short period of 2 weeks with our offshore team in India, making it a truly global project:
- business and product owner in France
- project office, including business analysis, testing and some of the frontend development in Australia
- core development team in India

We recommended to use the Magento ecommerce software platform, the community version, as a base. As it seemed most suited with its large range of e-commerce & internationalization features, extensibility and robustness.

However, on the extensibility side , we discovered early on that Magento can be quite an intricate beast to tame. As we ended up extending almost all aspects of the platform, we really had our hands dirty in overriding Mage core modules:

- custom catalog module for the 2 catalogs. One dedicated to the actual art products with some very specific characteristics and a custom product life cycle. Another catalog for the "artist packs" which we implemented as virtual products

- custom checkout module to cater for the dual checkout process. One for the art buyers and one for the artists signing up and purchasing packs.

- custom order workflow requiring among other things a custom sales module with non-standard order and shipment statuses, a whole list of non-standard emails, custom privileges for the artist and the administrator, etc.

- a new module to create the artist identity and to glue all the custom parts together. An artist being a hybrid between a customer, an admin and a vendor. All of it and more with association to be made between the purchased packs with their specific limitations and the related artist's products (such as product expiration date)

- we used and extended one of the numerous community extension (from Unirgy) to manage the drop-shipping functionality and related vendor features

- custom backoffice module to make up for the so called "artist intranet". The artist-seller administration interface became a hybrid construct between the "customer my account" interface, default Mage admin and Unirgy dropship vendor interface.

- creating a special role for the artist-seller with a whole new set of permissions as well as solving session management and other cookies intricacies.

- 2 stores configuration: a main store to sell the art work and an "artist" store to sell the artists packs.

- not to forget the internationalization as we strictly used the Magento i18n system to implement the French stores, in order to make it possible to launch in other languages in the future. We used the NLS extension to manage translation files.

- a custom design package to encompass all the templates and skin parts that we created to integrate the most beautiful yet challenging graphic designs provided by Revelis. Watch closely and you'll notice: "graphical" fonts, round corners, layered images, and transparencies. All of it required quite some smart to put it together from the default skin set provided by Magento. And yet you'll notice it's still not perfect in some browsers...

... and more (custom cron jobs, continuous integration, etc.)

Of course we worked the agile way. It took us 4 releases & 5 sprints to launch and 2 post-launch sprints/releases to actually clean-up and make sure all was working as it should. The current live version is therefore, based on release 1.6 with some additional polishing done by Revelis.

As you may understand lots of brain cells and sweat went into the process, but, we believe, it was worth it...

Enjoy the beauty and consume without moderation

It has now been completed, all of the domains we host for our clients including all the different applications we support have been moved across, also in large parts thanks to the support of Warwick Hall whom we are indebted to for his wonderful Unix skills. Only transLucidonline remains to be set-up on the new instance (wish us well for it!).

Thanks to everyone for their understanding that we had some downtime even if only short during this period.

We have unfortunately received a negative response from the 'Commonwealth Copyright Administration' that will not grant us a license for the government funded project toiletmap.gov.au. Based on the reply, there do not seem to be any hard, conclusive reasons for not granting Pantha Corp with a license other than that information should be always "correct and up to date" within the iPhone application which i am sure we would have found ways to ensure both requirements would be met by 'Show the Loo'.

Instead of providing Australians with an alternate means of access to the data on toiletmap.gov.au - that the Department of Health and Ageing collects and a 3rd-party supplier manages on behalf of the government - whereby we could have integrated and made available information such as opening-hours, nearby parking places, whether there is access for disabled and if there are baby facilities available, we will switch over to integrating data from other countries such as the UK, Germany and the US.

We will continue to keep the Australian version of 'Show the Loo' free in the hope that the Department might re-consider their initial reply which i paste in here below in its entirety.

---
Thank you for your interest in the National Continence Management Strategy and in particular the National Public Toilet Map (NPTM) project.

The National Public Toilet Map website aims to help people retain their freedom, independence and confidence by providing information on toilets throughout Australia. The main target groups for the website are older people with disabilities, carers and family members. The website shows the location of over 14,000 public toilets around Australia, with information on opening times and access for people with a disability. Public amenities data is provided through well established and supported networks, including local councils.

The Department of Health and Ageing is committed to maintaining the quality and integrity of the data and has contractual arrangements with a private third party provider in place until 30 June 2010.

As part of the contractual arrangement, a mobile phone application was developed in November 2008 which is now operational. Any mobile phone which has Internet capability can access the toilet map site via the normal website address www.toiletmap.gov.au. By entering the street address of your location, a mobile phone user will automatically be access information for up to five of the nearest public toilet locations, their opening hours and facilities.

In addition, an iPhone application is currently being developed by the contractor on behalf of the department.

The current arrangements ensure that people using the website and/or associated mobile phone application have, at all times, access to information which is correct and up to date. The department is therefore unable to provide you with access to the NPTM data requested.

Throughout the last two years, starting with the development of the simple website publishing system transLucidonline, Pantha has built up a unique project management framework for agile outsourced development.

Since then, we have had the pleasure of supporting a range of clients from Europe and Australia (start-ups to large corporate), providing them with agile outsourcing teams that have launched and maintained many online applications with great success.

We have shared some of our stories in several blog entries here. One on 'agile software development for teams' and how this can be applied to start-ups and companies of all sizes.

At some point we wondered why it still seemed difficult to explain the benefits of agile development and its potential to change how outsourcing at this point in time is done. What if we could demonstrate it placidly somehow to new potential clients? What if it could be made much easier to engage with people interested in what Pantha offers and show how fast concrete outcomes could be delivered given a mini project? Almost like going to a car dealer and asking him for a test drive?

Which is exactly what we will do, starting now of course.

Following an overview of Pantha's agile outsourcing services.
Today they linked to a study on a new drug called propranolol that "is usually used to control blood pressure" but has been found to have the possibility of reducing "strong fearful memories" for people suffering from traumatic events, xenophobia and so forth in a human study.

Read here in full, the article has the catchy title 'Drug banishes bad memories' which isn't really what it's about as the researchers themselves assert that one of the results was to confirm that the drug did not remove the memory itself but the fear to the object shown to the study participants (a spider). Quote: "the drug treatment didn't affect how well the participants remembered the link between the spiders and the shock. They could recall the link clearly, but the fear response had gone."
If you can, please do donate with the Australian Red Cross for the thousands who have lost all they had and the countless others deeply affected.

Following her message which speaks best by itself.

---
[...] in relation to the horrific Bushfire situation in Victoria, Australia.

I live in the rebuilt township of Cockatoo, Victoria; the worst hit town, obliterated in the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires in which 75 people died and 2,545 homes were lost, total land area burnt was approximately 2,100 km².

On the weekend I evacuated my young family ahead of the warnings that the fire conditions on Saturday 7th January 2009 would be worse than those on Ash Wednesday, and they were.

Thankfully our area was spared this time around, however many areas weren't.

The current situation is that there are 25 fires still burning out of control and a total 152 fires burning in Victoria yet to be declared safe, 173 people are confirmed dead and over 750 homes lost, 3,218 km² of land burnt, and still more to come.

I personally have dear friends still missing in Kinglake and Narbethong, including two children aged 6 and 3, and several other friends are thankfully safe, but without homes.
It cost $1.3 billion (in today's adjusted terms) to rebuild after Ash Wednesday. Victorian citizens, Corporate and Government have already raised $26 Million, however it will take much more to rebuild after this devastating event.

I am making a heartfelt appeal to anyone who can spare a few dollars to please make a donation to the Australian Red Cross, Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 on this link, every single dollar counts.

Please could you also share this email with your professional networks.
Thank you for your consideration and for sparing a thought for all who have lost beloved ones, pets, homes and memories.

Kind regards,

PS: Here are two pictures that show how close the fires are to me.

Cockatoo
The view from my home this morning; as you can see there are still fires burning, so a wind change in our direction would mean we too would lose our home.
As a first degree connection, you now know someone personally affected by this tragedy.

I thought this article, entitled "Future Watch: A.I. comes of age" from ComputerWorld might be worth posting that i found on Slashdot.

Reading how the robot would understand a natural language query, move about in the real-world to look for an object, pick it up, bring it back to the person who had requested it in the first place with the words ""Here is your stapler," says Stair, handing it to the man. "Have a nice day." might not sound like such a big deal at first glance as this would be something that any human (from the age of 4+ :) ) would consider to be a mundane task. However the fact that this robot can understand, learn and adapt to his environment have been formidable challenges that have gone unsolved for a very long time and it is encouraging to see strong progress being made.

What really reminded me of the book "The Singularity Is Near" from Ray Kurzweil was a quote from one of the researchers Tom Mitchell from Carnegie Mellon saying: "Suddenly, we have ways of observing what the brain is really doing, via brain imaging methods like functional MRI. It's a way to look into the brain while you are thinking and see, once a second, a movie of your brain's activity with a resolution of 1mm."

It's been exactly those sort of trends that Ray says have exponential qualities to them as in the discoveries and advancements we make in important fields such as genetic or robotic research and this will ultimately lead to an ever increasing speed of evolution. There might be hope that he could be right and we could end up getting the 'benefit' of for example drastically increased lifespans.
